■ Large Projects

The concept of a “large” project is, in some ways, not all that different from a general association, but I reference it here in contrast to the small-scale distributed development project. Large projects occur when a small-scale project is successful enough that many others want to join in, or its very nature requires some amount of governance to function because it requires sharing of resources among institutions, whether infrastructure, personnel, or materials. The latter sometimes grows out of a grant-funded project to create shared infrastructure, or sometimes after some small-scale experiments prove the need for larger infrastructure. It can be difficult to tell when what was once a small-scale distributed project is now a large project, but communities feeling growing pains may need to add an additional level of governance to ensure projects succeed.
